Frequently Asked Questions

How fast is iSWAN high speed internet?
The speeds of iSWAN are comparable to those of DSL or other high speed internet connections, with speeds starting at approximately 10 times the speed of dial up.

Does this require a phone line?
No, iSWAN high speed internet does not require a phone line in any way to operate. All of the internet data is sent over a wireless connection.

How does this work if it does not use phone lines?
Your computer or router will be plugged into a wireless client that will connect wirelessly to our nearest tower. From this point the data crosses our network and proceeds to the internet. No satellites or land lines are required for this to operate.

Do I need any other service provider for this to operate?
No, iSWAN high speed internet will provide what you need to use the internet. We provide email and the connection itself. You do not need AOL or any other service to get your internet to work.

Do I need to dial in, login, or connect in any other way to use the internet?
No, iSWAN high speed internet is an always on connection and is ready to go as long as your computer or router is on. You do not need to "dial in" in order to use your internet.

What kind of equipment needs to be installed at my home or place of business?
A typical installation consists of an externally mounted antenna with a single ethernet cable coming out which then runs down into either your computer or router.

How large of an antenna will be used?
The average installation requires an antenna with a size of about 1ft x 1ft. However in some cases a larger antenna must be used, and sometimes no antenna is needed at all. The size or presence of an antenna is determined by several factors, including distance from the tower and obstacles in between.

How many computers does this connection allow?
You can run as many computers off of your iSWAN connection as you can fit in your house or place of business. In order to run more than 1 computer off of the connection you will need to purchase a router and this can be done on your own.

Does weather affect it?
iSWAN high speed internet is not affected by weather and connection losses from weather can only occur if the physical antenna is misaligned due to wind. iSWAN uses nearby towers and does not rely on satellites, as satellite internet connections are lost during nearly every storm.

How secure is this connection?
The security of iSWAN high speed internet is comparable to that of any internet connection. With any high speed internet connection viruses can pose more of a threat due to the always on nature of the connection. It is recommended that computers connected to the internet via any means (even dial up) have an internet security (firewall) and antivirus program installed, but this is not required. As for credit card or other security-necessary actions, whenever these transactions occur all of the data is encrypted, you can tell this by the prefix "https://" in the URL or by the lock in the lower right hand corner of the browser. Once encrypted, your data is as secure as the site you are dealing with.

What does iSWAN stand for?
Well originally the network was called the SWAN which stood for Super Wide Area Network. But once we went looking for a domain name SWAN.net was already taken, so with the raging popularity of the 'i' prefix we added that and miraculously we were able to get the domain 'iSWAN.net'.
